The groom’s outfit is as important as the bride’s dress in creating the wedding’s visual story. In Colombia, grooms are increasingly paying attention to their attire, moving beyond the standard rented black tuxedo to more personalized and fitting options.
Groom Suit Styles
Tuxedo (Esmoquin)
The classic choice for evening formal weddings. Features satin lapels, a bow tie, and formal trousers with a satin stripe. Best for black-tie or formal evening weddings. Choose black, navy, or midnight blue.
Tailcoat (Frac)
The most formal option. A tailcoat has a short front and long tails in the back, worn with a white vest and bow tie. Reserved for ultra-formal or cathedral weddings starting after 6 pm. Less common in Colombia but striking when done properly.
Three-Piece Suit
A classic suit with vest, jacket, and matching trousers. Versatile and appropriate for most wedding formats. The vest can be removed for a less formal look during the reception. Available in wool, linen, or cotton blends.
Linen or Lightweight Suit
Perfect for beach, outdoor, or tropical destination weddings in Cartagena or San Andres. Light colors: beige, light gray, or pastel blue. Less formal but comfortable in Colombia’s warm climates.
Guayabera
A traditional Colombian formal shirt worn for tropical or countryside weddings. Can be paired with dress trousers or linen pants. A distinctive cultural choice that works for beach, hacienda, or rustic weddings.
Color Trends for 2026
Navy blue remains the most popular choice among Colombian grooms — it photographs well and suits most skin tones. Charcoal gray is a close second, offering a modern alternative to black. Light beige and tan are growing in popularity for daytime and outdoor weddings.
Accessories
A well-chosen tie or bow tie, pocket square matching the bridal colors, cufflinks (personalized or inherited), and proper dress shoes. In Colombia, formal loafers or oxfords in black or dark brown are standard.
